7 Tips for a Winning Job Post

As the Archdiocesan director of HR, I’m often asked, “What makes a job post stand out?” With the aim to attract the best candidates to serve our Catholic community, here are seven essential tips for crafting a job post that resonates with potential hires, particularly directed at our dedicated Catholic school administrators, parish secretaries, and priests.

1. Start With a Strong Title The job title is the first thing candidates see. Make it clear, professional, and reflective of the role’s duties. Avoid jargon and ensure it’s understandable outside of our internal circles. For instance, “Third Grade Catholic School Teacher – Passionate about Faith Formation” is direct and engaging.

2. Embrace the Mission We are a community driven by faith and service. Highlight how the role contributes to our mission. A sentence like, “Join us in shaping the minds and spirits of our youth,” can connect the job to our higher purpose.

3. Detail the Role Clarity is key. Describe responsibilities and daily tasks to give candidates a true sense of what the job entails. Transparency about the role’s challenges and rewards sets realistic expectations.

4. Specify Qualifications Be precise about necessary qualifications, distinguishing between ‘must-haves’ and ‘nice-to-haves’. This helps candidates self-select and ensures applicants meet essential criteria.

5. Showcase Our Community Candidates aren’t just joining a workplace; they’re joining a community. Include testimonials or stories from current staff about the support and camaraderie they experience.

6. Be Clear on Practicalities While our work is mission-driven, practical details matter. Include salary range, benefits, work hours, and any perks like professional development opportunities or community involvement.

7. Call to Action End with a clear call to action. Encourage candidates to apply and provide a direct link to the application. For instance, “If you’re ready to make a difference in the hearts and minds of our children, apply now to be part of our community.”

Remember, a job post is more than a vacancy notice; it’s an invitation to join a mission. Let’s make each post a reflection of our commitment to service and community. Together, we can find the right individuals to walk this journey with us.
